Ou a Obra de Arte na Era das Redes Sociais e da IA.

Como imaginar uma história revisionista da arte em relação à forma como a arte foi recontextualizada, descontextualizada, reproduzida incessantemente e hiper-mediada através dos circuitos das redes sociais? 
Alguns têm defendido que a internet, na sua totalidade, pode ser considerada uma espécie de meta-arte humana (ou pós-humana) coletiva. 

Serão as redes sociais um medium para a arte? Terá a IA inaugurado uma era de democratização radical da arte, em que qualquer pessoa que utilize IA pode tornar-se instantaneamente artista? Podemos considerar o AI slop um novo género artístico ou é apenas AI slop? Quem decide?  

Quem controla o acesso, e quem contorna esses mecanismos, no campo da cultura na era da IA? 
Qual será o aspeto da última obra de arte humana quando a IA se tornar a «superartista»?

Começaremos por visitar Era Uma Vez na América, exposição de longa-duração com curadoria de Isabel Carlos e da escultora Rita McBride, focando a forte representação da arte contemporânea norte-americana na Coleção Julião Sarmento e a relevância desse contexto artístico para obras de artistas nacionais e internacionais. 


É nos EUA que vive e trabalha a artista de origem iraniana Fariba Hajamadi, desde a década de 1970. A sua exposição Conversa de Corvos traz-nos questionamentos interculturais em diálogo com memórias vivenciais e íntimas. 


Terminaremos na exposição Everything is in your mind..., de Vasco Araújo, que, no conjunto exposto, integra written actions inéditas acentuando os vínculos entre palavra, imagem e performatividade no trabalho do artista.

De Armazém a Museu 
A arquitetura do Pavilhão Julião Sarmento pensada a partir das exposições patentes.

Situado em Belém, junto ao Tejo, o edifício do Pavilhão Julião Sarmento teve uma vida prévia. Vamos compreender como o arquiteto João Luís Carrilho da Graça, amigo do artista Julião Sarmento, transformou este antigo armazém industrial num novo centro de arte da cidade, casa de uma Coleção ímpar e lugar de uma programação cultural em constante diálogo com a contemporaneidade. 


Nesta sessão da atividade De Armazém a Museu, visitaremos as três exposições patentes no PAV-JS, refletindo sobre os papéis que a arquitetura pode desempenhar na conceção, montagem e concretização de cada projeto expositivo, transformando-os e sendo transformada por eles.

As palavras têm destaque em várias obras da Coleção Julião Sarmento, muito devido à forte presença dos conceptualismos neste acervo. Os próprios carimbos que Sarmento manda cunhar na década de 1970 são disso testemunho. Num deles, triangular, lê-se «ART IS A MATTER OF CONSCIOUSNESS» [A arte é uma questão de consciência]; num outro, circular, lê-se «Julião Sarmento / Coleccionador. Collector. Sammler. Collectionneur». 
Nesta oficina, após visitarmos as exposições, propomos uma reflexão na qual cada participante pensará numa palavra para a experiência que teve. Depois, vamos gravar esses termos em matrizes de linóleo e imprimi-los, “carimbando” com gravura a visita ao Pavilhão Julião Sarmento.

O desenho não é mera ferramenta. É ambiente de liberdade, pensamento e criação de mundos. 
Se o desenho de observação estimula as mais variadas consciências e interpretações do visível, o desenho de memória esclarece que a nossa construção percetiva do real é sempre pautada por uma enorme plasticidade. 
Nesta atividade, praticamos desenho de observação, desenho de memória e conjugações entre ambos que ultrapassam estes dois chavões. 
Começaremos por visitar as exposições patentes no Pavilhão Julião Sarmento. No envolvimento com as obras e com a arquitetura que as acolhe, escolheremos referentes para desenhar (peças específicas, vistas de exposição, pormenores da arquitetura…). Num primeiro momento, desenharemos in sito, frente a frente com os motivos; num segundo momento, desenharemos a partir da experiência vivida nas exposições, frente a frente connosco.

How to imagine a revisionist art history in relation to how art has been recontextualized, decontextualized, endlessly reproduced, and hyper-mediated via the circuits of social media?  
Some have argued that the internet, in its entirety, can be considered a type of collective human (or posthuman) meta-art. 
Is social media a medium for art? 
Has AI ushered in an age of radical democratization of art, wherein anyone using AI can instantaneously become an artist? 
Can we consider AI slop as a new genre of art, or is it just AI slop? 
Who decides? 
Who are the cultural gatekeepers – and gatecrashers – in the age of AI? 
What will the last human artwork look like once AI becomes the “superartist”?

We will begin by visiting Once Upon a Time in America, a long-term exhibition curated by Isabel Carlos and the sculptor Rita McBride, focusing on the strong presence of contemporary American art in the Julião Sarmento Collection and the relevance of that artistic context for works by national and international artists. 


The Iranian-born artist Fariba Hajamadi has lived and worked in the USA since the 1970s. Her exhibition Conversa de Corvos presents us with intercultural questions in dialogue with personal and intimate memories. 


Our tour concludes with Vasco Araújo’s exhibition Everything is in your mind..., which, within the body of work on display, incorporates previously unseen written actions, emphasising the links between word, image and performativity in the artist’s work.

From Wharehouse to Museum
Thinking about Pavilhão Julião Sarmento’s architecture departing from the current exhibitions

Located in Belém, near the Tagus River, the Pavilhão Julião Sarmento’s building had a previous life. We invite you to understand how the architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça, a close friend of Julião Sarmento, transformed this former warehouse into a new art space, home of a unique Collection and the place for a cultural program in permanent dialogue with contemporaneity. 


In this session of the From Warehouse to Museum guided tour, we will visit the three exhibitions currently on display at PAV-JS, reflecting on the roles that architecture can play in the design, installation and realisation of each exhibition project, transforming them and being transformed by them.

Words are prominent in several works from the Coleção Julião Sarmento, largely due to the strong presence of Conceptual Art in this collection. The rubber stamps that Sarmento commissioned in the 1970s are testimony to this as well. One of them, triangular, reads "ART IS A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE"; another, circular, reads "Julião Sarmento / Coleccionador. Collector. Sammler. Collectionneur». 
In this workshop, after visiting the exhibitions, we propose a reflection in which each participant will think of a word for the experience they had. Then, we will engrave these terms on linoleum matrices and print them, "stamping" with a printmaking process the visit to the Pavilhão Julião Sarmento.

Drawing is not merely a tool. It is an environment of freedom, taught and the creation of worlds. 
If observational drawing stimulates the most varied consciousnesses and interpretations of the visible, memory drawing clarifies that our perceptive construction of reality is always guided by enormous plasticity. 
In this activity, we practice observational drawing, memory drawing, and combinations between the two that go beyond these two commonplaces. 
We will begin by visiting the exhibitions on display at the Pavilhão Julião Sarmento. Engaging with the works and the architecture that houses them, we will choose subjects to draw (specific art pieces, exhibition views, architecture details…). First, we will draw in situ, face to face with the subjects; then, in a second moment, we will draw from the whole experience of the exhibitions, face to face with ourselves.
