Pode a Arte ser Transgressiva?

Este é o título de uma exposição de pintura e escultura de Sarmento, apresentada na Galeria Sean Kelly, em Nova Iorque, em 2005. A exposição explorou várias noções de transgressão, dialogando com as reflexões de Foucault sobre o conceito de transgressão de Bataille. Podemos considerar a síntese que Sarmento faz destes conceitos filosóficos como ponto de partida para pensar se — e de que modo — a arte pode ser transgressiva nas circunstâncias atuais (e futuras), bem como para refletir sobre o que significa «transgressão» no século XXI.

No âmbito da exposição Era uma Vez na América, vamos refletir sobre diálogos artísticos entre os dois lados do Atlântico a partir de obras da Coleção Julião Sarmento. Interrogaremos ideias, movimentos e práticas fundamentais da arte contemporânea e o modo como artistas internacionais e nacionais tomam parte nessa conversação. 

Terminaremos a nossa visita com a exposição Conversa de Corvos, de Fariba Hajamadi, artista nascida no Irão e a viver nos EUA desde a década de 1970, com um trabalho no qual dimensões históricas e interculturais se confrontam com a contemporaneidade.

Vamos começar por visitar a segunda exposição de longa-duração do Pavilhão Julião Sarmento, Era Uma Vez na América, com curadoria de Isabel Carlos e da escultora Rita McBride, autora da marcante Arena (1997–em curso), da qual apresentamos uma versão inédita concebida e construída por estudantes e professores de Arquitetura da Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. Nesta nova Arena, discutiremos tópicos espoletados por obras da Coleção Julião Sarmento. 

A troca de ideias continuará na exposição Conversa de Corvos, de Fariba Hajamadi, questionando interseções entre prática artística, cultura museológica e narrativa histórica.

 

Por fim, a visita passará pela nova exposição individual de Vasco Araújo.

As palavras têm destaque em várias obras da Coleção Julião Sarmento, muito devido à forte presença dos conceptualismos neste acervo. Os próprios carimbos que Sarmento manda cunhar na década de 1970 são disso testemunho. Num deles, triangular, lê-se «ART IS A MATTER OF CONSCIOUSNESS» [A arte é uma questão de consciência]; num outro, circular, lê-se «Julião Sarmento / Coleccionador. Collector. Sammler. Collectionneur». 
Nesta oficina, após visitarmos as exposições, propomos uma reflexão na qual cada participante pensará numa palavra para a experiência que teve. Depois, vamos gravar esses termos em matrizes de linóleo e imprimi-los, “carimbando” com gravura a visita ao Pavilhão Julião Sarmento.

O desenho não é mera ferramenta. É ambiente de liberdade, pensamento e criação de mundos. 
Se o desenho de observação estimula as mais variadas consciências e interpretações do visível, o desenho de memória esclarece que a nossa construção percetiva do real é sempre pautada por uma enorme plasticidade. 
Nesta atividade, praticamos desenho de observação, desenho de memória e conjugações entre ambos que ultrapassam estes dois chavões. 
Começaremos por visitar as exposições patentes no Pavilhão Julião Sarmento. No envolvimento com as obras e com a arquitetura que as acolhe, escolheremos referentes para desenhar (peças específicas, vistas de exposição, pormenores da arquitetura…). Num primeiro momento, desenharemos in sito, frente a frente com os motivos; num segundo momento, desenharemos a partir da experiência vivida nas exposições, frente a frente connosco.

Can Art be Transgressive?

This is the title of an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Sarmento that took place at the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York in 2005. The show explored various notions of transgression, in relation to Foucault’s reflections on Bataille’s concept of transgression. Here we can consider Sarmento’s synthesizing of these philosophical concepts in his art as a jumping off point to speculate if and how art can be transgressive in our current (and future) circumstances, and to think about what transgression means in the 21st Century.

In the context of the exhibition Once Upon a Time in America, we will depart from a selection of works from the Julião Sarmento Collection to reflect on artistic dialogues between the two sides of the Atlantic. We will interrogate key ideas, movements and practices of contemporary art, and the way international and Portuguese artists take part in this whole conversation. 

We will conclude our tour with the exhibition Crows in Conversation by Fariba Hajamadi—an artist born in Iran and living in the USA since the 1970s—featuring work in which historical and intercultural dimensions confront contemporaneity.

We will begin by visiting the Pavilhão's second long-term exhibition, Once Upon a Time in America, curated by Isabel Carlos and sculptor Rita McBride, creator of the striking Arena (1997–ongoing), of which we are presenting a previously unseen version conceived and built by Architecture students and professors from the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. In this new Arena, we will focus on several topics raised by works from the Julião Sarmento Collection on display. 

The exchange of ideas will continue in Fariba Hajamadi’s exhibition Crows in Conversation, exploring intersections between art, museum culture, and historical narrative.

 

Finally, the tour will include Vasco Araújo’s new solo exhibition.

Words are prominent in several works from the Coleção Julião Sarmento, largely due to the strong presence of Conceptual Art in this collection. The rubber stamps that Sarmento commissioned in the 1970s are testimony to this as well. One of them, triangular, reads "ART IS A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE"; another, circular, reads "Julião Sarmento / Coleccionador. Collector. Sammler. Collectionneur». 
In this workshop, after visiting the exhibitions, we propose a reflection in which each participant will think of a word for the experience they had. Then, we will engrave these terms on linoleum matrices and print them, "stamping" with a printmaking process the visit to the Pavilhão Julião Sarmento.

Drawing is not merely a tool. It is an environment of freedom, taught and the creation of worlds. 
If observational drawing stimulates the most varied consciousnesses and interpretations of the visible, memory drawing clarifies that our perceptive construction of reality is always guided by enormous plasticity. 
In this activity, we practice observational drawing, memory drawing, and combinations between the two that go beyond these two commonplaces. 
We will begin by visiting the exhibitions on display at the Pavilhão Julião Sarmento. Engaging with the works and the architecture that houses them, we will choose subjects to draw (specific art pieces, exhibition views, architecture details…). First, we will draw in situ, face to face with the subjects; then, in a second moment, we will draw from the whole experience of the exhibitions, face to face with ourselves.
